What a website really costs in South Africa in 2026

Quotes for the same brief swing from R1,500 to R60,000, and most business owners have no way to judge which one is fair. Here is what sits behind each number.

The short version

  • A credible small-business site in South Africa lands between R1,900 and R20,000, depending on page count and complexity.
  • Domain, hosting and email are ongoing costs of roughly R150 to R400 a month, and they are separate from the build.
  • Content and photography are the most common reason a project runs late, not development.
  • Insist on owning the code and the accounts before you pay a deposit.

The honest ranges

Nobody publishes this, so here it is. These are realistic South African market rates in 2026 for work done properly by a developer or small studio, not by an offshore template farm and not by a large agency with account managers to fund.

What you needRealistic rangeWho it suits
One-page siteR1,900 – R4,000Freelancers, new businesses, a single service
Small business site (4–6 pages)R4,500 – R12,000Most trades, practices and service businesses
Larger site (10+ pages, location pages)R12,000 – R30,000Multi-branch, multi-service, content-heavy
E-commerce storeR7,500 – R45,000Depends almost entirely on product count and payment flow
Custom system or booking toolR25,000+Anything with logins, dashboards or integrations

If a quote sits far below the bottom of a range, something is being left out. Usually it is content, revisions, or the assumption that you will supply finished text and images on day one.

Where the money actually goes

You are not paying for pages. You are paying for a handful of separate jobs that happen to arrive as one website.

  • Planning and structure. Deciding what pages exist, what each one has to achieve, and what a visitor should do next. Skipping this is why so many sites look fine and convert nothing.
  • Design. Layout, typography, colour, and how it holds together on a phone. Roughly a third of a typical build.
  • Development. Turning the design into fast, accessible, search-readable code that does not break in six months.
  • Content work. Writing or rewriting your copy, sizing and compressing images, setting page titles and descriptions.
  • Setup and launch. Domain, hosting, SSL, professional email, analytics, Google Search Console, redirects from the old site.

The last one is quietly important. A site that launches without redirects from an existing domain can lose years of accumulated Google ranking in a weekend.

The costs nobody quotes for

These are not hidden fees so much as things people forget to budget for. Ask about all six before you sign.

ItemTypical costHow often
.co.za domainR100 – R200Yearly
HostingR80 – R350 per monthMonthly
Professional emailR0 – R150 per mailboxMonthly
SSL certificateUsually free with good hostingYearly
Stock photographyR0 – R3,000Once
Maintenance and updatesR350 – R1,500 per monthOptional, monthly

Plan on roughly R150 to R400 a month to simply keep a small business site online with working email. If a quote never mentions this, that is a warning sign rather than a saving.

What changes the price most

In rough order of impact:

  1. Page countEvery extra page is design, copy and testing. Five well-built pages beat fifteen thin ones.
  2. Who writes the copySupplying finished text can cut a quote meaningfully. Asking the developer to write it adds real hours.
  3. FunctionalityA contact form is trivial. Bookings, logins, payments, stock levels and integrations are not.
  4. Design originalityA customised template is cheaper than a design drawn for your business. Both are legitimate choices.
  5. Revision roundsFixed rounds keep a project on budget. Unlimited revisions either cost more upfront or end in an awkward conversation.
  6. DeadlineCompressing four weeks into one means rearranging other work, and it is fair to be charged for that.

When cheap genuinely costs more

A R1,500 site is not automatically a bad decision. For someone testing an idea this month, it can be exactly right. It becomes expensive in four specific situations.

  • You do not get the login details, so any future change has to go through the original builder.
  • It is built on a page builder tied to a subscription that rises every year and cannot be moved elsewhere.
  • It loads slowly on mobile data, which is how most South African visitors will see it.
  • It was never structured for search, so it never appears for the terms your customers actually type.

The rebuild then costs more than doing it properly the first time, because someone has to unpick the old site as well as build the new one.

A fair test before you pay a deposit. Ask: do I own the code and the hosting account when this is paid off, and can another developer take it over without starting again? If the answer is anything other than a clear yes, the price is not the real issue.

What we charge, and why

VB Dynamics starts at R1,900 for a focused one-pager, R4,500 for a five-page business site, and R7,500 for e-commerce and custom work. Every build is hand-written HTML, CSS, JavaScript and PHP rather than a page builder, which is why our sites load quickly and why you can hand the files to anyone afterwards.
